Eighteen Pyramids
A 16mm film companion to the book, Pyramids: Special Economic Vortex Zones of North America (The Fulcrum Press, Special Effects, 2025)—Ian James’ film studies a diverse range of the vibrational, energy-condensing structures across North America. Inspired by durational looking and structural filmmaking and shot during several of James’ pilgrimage trips to these sites, the film is a motion picture account of select pyramid locations from the photographic project. Sites include Michael Reynolds’ Earthship pyramid, a Michigan office furniture design studio turned data center, a rural Wisconsin night club, a fundamentalist Mormon temple, and more. Soundtrack by A Never Ending Explosion.
Pyramids: Special Economic Vortex Zones of North America
Inspired by the architecture-form’s relationship to New Age culture and metaphysical belief systems, Ian James has conducted a decade-long study of late period pyramid structures across North America, framing his travels as a form of spiritual pilgrimage under late capitalism. Shot on large format film and featuring 78 color and black and white photographs, the first edition hardcover book includes an essay by Aurora Tang of the Center for Land Use Interpretation, a travelogue by the artist, and full color map. Design by Special Effects. Co-published by The Fulcrum Press and Special Effects.
