Ben Russell joins us for the Los Angeles premiere of his Daumal inspired feature, The Invisible Mountain.
The Invisible Mountain
The Invisible Mountain is Ben Russell’s fourth feature film, a hallucinatory portrait of a Finnish wanderer moving through the vibrating edges of the world in search of the mysterious Mount Analogue, located at the juncture between Heaven and Earth.
Filmed on luminous Super 16mm filmstock and coupled with an immersive 5.1 soundscape, The Invisible Mountain exists as a spiritual and conceptual spin-off to Russell’s 2013 feature film A Spell to Ward off the Darkness (co-directed with British artist Ben Rivers, who briefly makes an appearance behind the camera here). This hybrid documentary follows one man’s secular pilgrimage along the long overland path from Finnish Lapland to Greece in pursuit of an impossible destination - a fictional mountain floating in the sea.
Loosely based on the final (and unwritten) chapter of Rene Daumal’s unfinished utopian text Mount Analogue (1952), The Invisible Mountain occupies the vision of Tuomo Tuovinen, a man whose waking life is a radiant mirror of his own unconscious. Equal parts road movie, concert film, embodied performance, cinema verité and hypnagogic reverie, this is a cinema-voyage in which life is the dream of death and transcendence is a very real destination.
Featuring Tuomo Tuovinen with musical performances by Olimpia Splendid (Finland) and Greg Fox (USA).
